Acquisition of Mulitiple Case Marking in Korean

چکیده
This study investigates the nature of Nominative case in Korean, focusing on multiple Nom constructions, a phenomenon which has been the main source for differing views on Nom case. The study evaluates two opposing syntactic views of Nom case in Korean: default case approach vs structural case approach, by examining the time course of acquisition for relevant constructions using an experimental method. The acquisitional result will provide supporting evidence for the following three arguments. First, Nom case in Korean is not a default case, arguing against Kang (1998), Kuroda (1988, 1992), and Fukui and Takano (1998) among others. Second, the multiple Nom construction is not a property of default case, but an instance of parameter setting of functional head T. Third, the properties of multiple Nom and multiple Acc are not instances of a single parameter. The first noticeable thing about Korean Nom case is that Nom case is morphologically marked, as well as Acc case, as shown in (1).

The L1 Acquisition of the Imperfective Aspect markers in Korean: a Comparison with Japanese
This study investigates the L1 acquisition of the Korean imperfective aspect markers -ko issand -a iss-, and attempts to identify language-general and languagespecific acquisition patterns through comparison with Japanese. In cross-linguistic research on the acquisition of tense-aspect marking, children have been observed to associate progressive marking with activity verbs in early stages of d...
متن کاملThe Effect of Instructional Order on the L2 Acquisition of the Korean Imperfective Aspect
It has been widely observed that in the L2 acquisition of aspect, progressive/imperfective marking is acquired earlier with activity verbs than with achievement verbs (the Aspect Hypothesis; Andersen & Shirai, 1994). This pattern has been seen repeatedly in Japanese -te i(e.g., Shirai & Kurono, 1998), and in -ko issand -a issin L2 Korean (e.g., Lee & Kim, 2007). However, Ishida (2004) found her...
متن کاملThe Acquisition of Imperfective Aspect Marking in Korean as a Second Language by Japanese Learners
This paper investigates the developmental process through which L2 learners acquire two „imperfective‟ aspect markers in Korean, -ko iss(progressive and resultative) and -a iss(resultative) which attempts to identify language-general and language-specific patterns in the L2 acquisition of the Korean imperfective aspect by Japanese learners by comparing the results with previous research. Study ...
متن کاملWhy Do Children Say "Me do it"?
A common feature of early speech is that children use case marking incorrectly. Several researchers have proposed that the child's mistakes are limited to the misuse of nominative case, and are corrected once the child acquires verbal morphology. In this paper I will show that this characterization of the problem is incorrect: children misuse all case forms, not just nominative case. In additio...
